Knee Tendonitis

Causes, Symptoms and Treatments of Knee Tendonitis

Thigh bones, several muscles and leg bones are what form the knee joint. Tendonitis is this case is the inflammation that occurs within the tendons. In most cases, the tendons and other structures within the knee experience regular wear and tear.

A tendonitis knee commonly occurs in people who involve themselves in various activities such as athletics and other sports like football, rugby or rowing. As a result of a regular rubbing of the knee tendons, inflammation may occur due to excessive usage of the knee joints or any kind of trauma that involves the knee joint. So, if you are among those people who are actively in sports, you are highly at risk of developing tendonitis in knee.

Various types of knee tendonitis

Patellar Tendonitis

Patellar Tendonitis

There are various types of knee tendonitis with the commonest being quadriceps tendonitis, “jumpers knee” (patellar tendonitis) as well as the iliotibial band friction syndrome. Of these, patellar tendonitis, otherwise referred to as tendonitis knee, is the commonest. This is a condition that is prevalent in athletes taking part in jumping, running as well as other activities that expose the knees to high pressures. These activities expose the knee tendons to wear and tear which worsens with time and eventually tendon inflammation.

In some cases, tendonitis in knee may be caused by rheumatoid arthritis which is commonly associated with inflammation occurring in various body joints. Knee tendonitis symptoms depend on a number of factors; age being one of them. In other cases, athletes and sportsmen/women whose knee muscles are experiencing a higher degree of maturity are at a higher risk of developing tendonitis knee.

Signs and symptoms

Tendonitis knee treatment depends on the severity and symptoms and signs the victim exhibits and this also varies depending on the degree of inflammation and the affected tendons. The most common knee tendonitis symptoms include pain. The degree of pain is based on the amount of tendon damage. In less severe cases, one may experience pains after actively participating in sports or after a long walk.

Severe knee tendonitis symptoms may occur during activities that involve much usage of the knee joint; for instance during a running competition. In most cases, victims of this condition not only experience difficulties in movements but also the affected part may swell and be very painful when touched. Older people may start feeling pains when they ascend or descend stairs.

Knee tendonitis treatment

These conditions calls for a number of treatments and these may involve usage of medication prescriptions to ease pains and in very complicated cases; surgery may be required to remedy the situation. To prescribe any treatment, the first thing is to establish the amount of damage to the knee tendons. Qualified physicians choose their methods of treatments basing on the results of their tests and the type of symptoms being exhibited by the patient.

However, the doctor may suggest further tests to get to the core of the cause of your symptoms. These may include ultrasonography, MRI scans and other advanced methods. Knee tendonitis exercises may also be helpful in terms of remedy.
