Different Causes Of Lateral Knee Pain

Lateral Knee Pain

Lateral Knee Pain

There are various injuries that can result to lateral knee pain. Referring to reports by Mayo clinic; 33% of Americans above the age of 45 experience knee problems. When any tissue within the knee (tendon, muscle, ligament, cartilage and bone) is affected, the pain we are likely to feel is lateral pain. However, it is important to note that lateral knee pain can be eased using conservative methods of medication.

The iliotibial band syndrome (IBS)

In some cases, iliotibial band syndrome can result to this kind of pain. In reference to a research done by the Nicholas Institute Of Sports Medicine and Athletic Trauma (NISMAT), which stands out as the very first United States’ facility that is hospital-based devoted to sports and medicine study, pain felt on the lateral femoral condyle during active physical exercises such as running or walking is what is referred to as iliotibial band syndrome.

In the actual sense, lateral femoral condyle is basically a bony status on the exterior part of the knee while the iliotibial band comprises of an elongated tissue band stretching along the lateral part of the thigh through the lateral femoral condyle and finally entering the tibia’s lateral condyle (shin bone).

According to NISMAT, when iliotibial band is shortened due to excessive usage, together with repeatedly bending of the knee and extension, the possibility of experiencing pain and inflammation in the lateral femoral condyle is very high. However, physical and manual therapies can effectively be used to deal with this condition.

Lateral collateral ligament (LCL) injury

There are times when one may experience lateral knee pain after running especially so when one picks a knee sprain (partial or complete tear, or overstretching of the lateral ligament) in the process. As a matter of fact, lateral collateral ligament plays a vital role in providing stability to the exterior part of the knee. Pressure has been blamed for this type of knee injury and it is mostly associated with trauma that may occur inside or medial knee aspect.

When the medial knee is exposed to excessive pressure, stress and stretching of the structures on the exterior part of the knee, results to this type of lateral knee pain. This condition is commonly characterized by a feeling of knee instability, swollen knee, softness on the exterior part of the knee, and lateral knee pain.

Lateral knee pain treatment may involve a number of tests before determining the most appropriate way to deal with your condition. However, given that causes of lateral knee pain are many; your doctor may be forced to perform a number of tests to determine the actual cause of your symptoms before suggesting any treatment.

In most cases, a two week period is essential to ensure that manipulation of such joints as the proximal tibiofibular as well as recommendation of appropriate exercises like balancing, and strengthening of the hip muscles and the like. At least after undergoing lateral knee pain treatment, and also having observed all the necessary physical practices, you will definitely get back on track and continue with your sport training as usual.
